Are you comfortable at social or networking events?

When I attend networking events, I meet many people who are outgoing and easy to talk to.

I also meet many who look uncomfortable and hang in the background.

Honestly, I’ve been in both places, and my level of comfort has to do with a few different things I’ve listed below.

1) Am I excited to be there?

• I choose to attend events where I will meet other people who have similar interests. I’m involved in a few business building networking groups, and I really enjoy talking to other entrepreneurs to see what they are up to. I also like to determine if I can be of service to them and how we might be able to connect on projects. Thinking about how I can help the other person, and asking them questions helps me be comfortable and best of all, allows me to learn about others.

• I go to “social” events where I get to hang with fabulous women and laugh and share stories. I practice authenticity as much as I can, knowing that is a genuine way to make good friends.

• I also go to a dog training group where Joe and I bring our 6 month old puggle, Tucker, for training. My motorcycle group includes rides with other outdoor loving bikers. My nature group meets monthly to observe the changes of nature. There’s also my yoga group. I’m also thinking of joining a Toastmaster’s group too….hmmm, will have to watch that activity calendar.

2) I try to be prepared. I make sure to bring business cards for the networking events, remember B-day cards for my gal pals at the social event, and at least get there in plenty of time for the other functions.

3) I adjust my attitude. Yes, there are days when I just don’t feel like going. But if I put on an outfit I feel great in and remember why I’ve chosen to be part of this group, I renew my excitement level and have a good time.

What tips can you share that help you be more comfortable in networking or social situations?
