Motivation is a funny thing, and far too often the reason you don’t move forward or succeed on something you badly desire is because you get in your own way.

Why do you get in your own way and self sabotage when you clearly want something? From my own experience of coaching and mentoring clients over the past 10 years, I’ve seen some common patterns of human behavior emerge. If you recognize them in yourself, that’s awesome, because AWARENESS is the first step in making effective behavior and thought changes!

The need to look good or to be right:

How many times does ego get in the way of productivity? Far too often. We are afraid we may not get it right, so we work it and work it until the opportunity is gone. Results? Missed opportunities and bank accounts that don’t grow. Solutions? Start saying “yes” to things and make yourself finish them before going onto the next project. We’ve all heard “done is better than perfect” and when it comes to your business getting attention, you’ve got to STOP trying to be perfect and START finishing things that get you noticed!

The head in the sand syndrome:

I can spot it a mile away. . . .there’s an excuse given for every little thing that does not go their way. Can’t exercise? Someone keeping them to busy. Can’t work on their action plan? Someone needed them badly and they could not let them down. Excuses are a way of letting yourself off the hook, but they only hurt the person making them. If you can’t rely on yourself, unfortunately, your clients and prospects will quickly find out that the unreturned phone calls and promises are falling short, and they won’t be relying on you either. SOLUTION? Make promises to yourself and others ONLY if you can keep them, then do just that!

The fear of saying “hell yes” to ourselves and accepting joy, prosperity, happiness and success:

Do we dare accept ease? What about the voice in our head well established when we were growing up that said “if you want to get anywhere in life, you’ve got to work hard, and it won’t be easy!” Yes, we do need to stay focused on our goals, and put in the effort, but I have seen people literally knock themselves out with exhaustion and overwhelm because they don’t allow themselves to do anything but work their fingers to the bone. And, in that state of exhaustion, gone is their real efficiency, their real creativity and let’s face it, they’re not very attractive to a potential buyer when stressed to the max.

So step up to the plate, tell your other self that likes to hold you back to step aside, and shine your light in a way that is a beacon to others and gets you noticed! How have you stepped aside so you can be your very best??

We all want to fit in. We all want to be accepted, loved, and thought highly of.

Sometimes, we hide behind our true selves because of that need to be accepted. We’ve shut down our true authentic selves, and walk around smiling, pleasing people, not daring to say no when we need to, taking on too much, let people run over us, and not setting boundaries.

We aren’t assertive when we need to be, fearing that we might make someone mad. We don’t tell others how we really feel in a strategy meeting because our idea might not be a good one.

It’s time to love yourself, love your unique personalities, gifts and ideas, and let your light shine brightly. When my clients try to please everyone and provide service to a mixed target market, I work with them until they get clear on who “their people are.”

I tell them about the 1/3 rule: that a third of the people in the world will be your kind of people, you will connect with them right away, sharing a camaraderie and sense of shared values – you’re just like them and they are like you.

Then a third of the people and the world will feel neutral about you and you about them and that’s fine. And then there will be that last third of the people who rub you the wrong way, have different values, and don’t connect with you and you don’t feel a connection with them at all.

Once my clients understand the one third rule they take a big sigh of relief and give themselves permission to look for “their” kind of people. They begin to market to “their kind of people.” They feel more comfortable in being their authentic selves, speaking up when they need to, even firing clients who have been negligent in paying their bills or have been difficult to work with.

“Master your Motivation” ask yourself:
What unique and wonderful trait have you shut down in order to fit in; that you are NOW ready to let shine?

Please leave a comment below or on my Facebook or Twitter pages.

Remember learning to ride a bike for the first time? I bet you were scared.

Remember that first date? Terrible butterflies.

Walking into a job interview with the hiring team sitting around the board table? Terrified.

Thinking about quitting your “secure” job and starting your own business? No way, too much of a risk.

Yes, fear can wreck havoc with our dreams, block us from moving forward and turn us into sputtering, sweat dripping, mind numbed creatures.

The good news is; is that we can learn to beat fear and put it in its place!

Fear is one of the most basic human emotions. It’s programmed into our nervous systems and works like an instinct. From the time beginning, we are equipped with the survival instincts necessary to respond with fear when we sense danger or feel unsafe.

Fear is useful too as it helps protect us by alerting us to danger. It prepares us to deal with the danger at hand. Feeling afraid is very natural — and helpful, in some situations. Fear can be like a warning, a signal that cautions us to be careful.

Like all emotions, fear can be mild, medium, or intense, depending on the situation and the person. The feeling of fear can be brief or it can last longer, turning into chronic worry and keeping us up at night.

The problem with this basic emotion is that fear can get in the way of when we strive to learn something new, or start a new undertaking that we perceive as risky.

The protective feature of fear that keeps us from walking too close to the edge of the cliff is called F.alse E.vidence A.ppreaing R.eal. Our rational mind tells us that yes indeed we DO want to go for that new career opportunity or we DO want to get back out there on the dating scene, or we DO want to learn how to become a speaker to promote our business, but our subconscious mind emphasizes and communicates to us that this new undertaking is something to be cautious of and better yet, encourages us to just give up that intention all together to stay safe.

The wonderful thing about dreams is that they don’t give up…they keep nagging at us until we are brave enough, their drive becomes stronger than the fear and we’re able to move forward.

I’ve faced fear, broken through it and you can too. It gets easier every time you take on a new risk and learn how powerful indeed you are.

FOUR EASY STEPS TO OVERCOME FEAR:

Know it’s natural and expect it. Be aware that fear is a natural human instinct that will raise its ugly head whenever you are thinking about taking a new step or on the cutting edge of a breakthrough. Expect it and know it’s natural and happens to everyone.

Feel the fear, breathe into it, and acknowledge it. Make friends with it. Imagine the worst case scenario – most times it has to do with the fear of failure, the fear of being judged (the “outcast” fear is a primal reaction going way back and has helped us survive in groups). When you get a grip on the worst case scenario, for example, losing everything you have (lack of security) and worry about living in a cardboard box, you can take an honest, straight forward look in the eye at fear to realize that the worst case scenario is not likely to occur! You’re much more resilient and resourceful than your worst case scenario; just take a look into your past accomplishments for evidence.

Learn everything you can about the goal you are undertaking. Knowledge is power and knowledge scares fear away. If your striving to become a speaker which is the 2nd strongest fear, after the fear of death. Find a coach or mentor, practice in small groups, and learn your material inside and out. This will diminish your fear in a BIG way.

Practice makes perfect – don’t expect perfection. If you are used to wearing sneakers, and you put on a pair of heels, yes, you’ll feel wobbly. First time out on the snowboard? You will definitely fall down. But practice builds confidence AND skill level, so don’t give up.

Of course, stronger fears, or phobias, can be debilitating and consuming. These may require additional assistance in understanding and overcoming obstacles. People can learn to overcome phobias by gradually facing their fears. This is not easy at first, of course because it takes willingness and bravery on your part. Sometimes people need additional help to guide them through the process.

I know, I’ve been in your shoes. You have a dream, a grand vision of something that will happen “some day.” Maybe it is something that you’ve kept quietly to yourself, or that you journal about, or that you’ve incorporated into your dream board, or that you boast about.

But the sad truth of the matter is that your dream has not yet begun to take shape because you have not stepped in to your dream. It takes courage to step into your dream and make your dream come alive, but without beginning, you will never see it become reality.

Are you waiting until the time is right? Until you have more money, or until the kids are gone? Or have you discounted your dream and shut it down because you think you are too old, you don’t have that degree, you don’t look perfect…or maybe because you just might fail?

The truth of the matter is that there is no perfect time, no right time. Now! is the right time to step into your dream. Tell yourself no more excuses. The time is now. All the “what if’’s and “buts” are just fear disguising themselves as excuses.
Have you ever walked into a room full of strangers, perhaps at a networking event, and swear they could see you shaking as the sweat trickled down your back?

Have you ever been nervous about standing up and introducing yourself in a meeting?

Believe or not, it’s not only you who has felt that way, we all have!

The truth is that we feel our anxiety and our discomfort in uncomfortable situations far more than other people see it. People want to see us succeed, and are rooting for us, and are quite forgiving even if your nervousness is apparent. Why? Because they’ve been in your shoes.

We all heard the saying “feel the fear and do it anyway.” I like to remember the wise saying “fake it till you make it!”

The discomfort of something becomes less uncomfortable the more you do it. How do you get over your fear of public speaking, the 2nd most prevalent fear after the fear of death?

You do what I did, and learn as much as you can about public speaking or whatever you are fearful about so you know the mechanics of it, then put yourself in situations time after time after time where you need to get up and face your fear. Was I a worried they would see me being nervous? Absolutely. But the more I faced my fear, the more comfortable I became speaking in public.

Thought of the day:
Today ask yourself, what have you been avoiding because you have been fearful? Once you know, then you can begin the practice of becoming more comfortable.

Please leave a comment below or on my Facebook or Twitter pages.

My girlfriend LeAnn, who’s also a fellow coach, and I have had numerous conversations over the years about taking risks and stepping into our greatness. She calls taking risks “being out on the skinny branches.” That’s such a vivid image to me, not knowing if the branch will break any minute under our feet but trusting we are supported.

Risk taking is any time we are really pushing our own personal limits; trying something new, and listening to that intuition of “yes I can do it — but I’m so darn afraid” and doing it anyways.

No matter what you’re up to in your life, trying to lose weight, going back to school after raising a family, starting a new career, or striving to make that six-figure mark in your business, you will need to stretch yourself and break out of your comfort zone.

The beauty of “hanging out in the skinny branches” is that once you are there, a new foundation somehow grows under your feet and the branch extends and extends supporting you to continue to grow and thrive.

Mastering Your Motivation – Thought of the day:
Realize that life is about trials and errors and it is those trials that result in your business growth, your personal development, and increases your confidence.
I say “Life is only as rich as the risks you are willing to take.”

What are you willing to try? Let me know, by leaving a comment below or on my Facebook or Twitter pages.
