Are you your Own Worst Enemy? 3 Ways to Tell if you’re Getting in your Own Way
Motivation is a funny thing, and far too often the reason you don’t move forward or succeed on something you badly desire is because you get in your own way.
Why do you get in your own way and self sabotage when you clearly want something? From my own experience of coaching and mentoring clients over the past 10 years, I’ve seen some common patterns of human behavior emerge. If you recognize them in yourself, that’s awesome, because AWARENESS is the first step in making effective behavior and thought changes!
The need to look good or to be right:
How many times does ego get in the way of productivity? Far too often. We are afraid we may not get it right, so we work it and work it until the opportunity is gone. Results? Missed opportunities and bank accounts that don’t grow. Solutions? Start saying “yes” to things and make yourself finish them before going onto the next project. We’ve all heard “done is better than perfect” and when it comes to your business getting attention, you’ve got to STOP trying to be perfect and START finishing things that get you noticed!
The head in the sand syndrome:
I can spot it a mile away. . . .there’s an excuse given for every little thing that does not go their way. Can’t exercise? Someone keeping them to busy. Can’t work on their action plan? Someone needed them badly and they could not let them down. Excuses are a way of letting yourself off the hook, but they only hurt the person making them. If you can’t rely on yourself, unfortunately, your clients and prospects will quickly find out that the unreturned phone calls and promises are falling short, and they won’t be relying on you either. SOLUTION? Make promises to yourself and others ONLY if you can keep them, then do just that!
The fear of saying “hell yes” to ourselves and accepting joy, prosperity, happiness and success:
Do we dare accept ease? What about the voice in our head well established when we were growing up that said “if you want to get anywhere in life, you’ve got to work hard, and it won’t be easy!” Yes, we do need to stay focused on our goals, and put in the effort, but I have seen people literally knock themselves out with exhaustion and overwhelm because they don’t allow themselves to do anything but work their fingers to the bone. And, in that state of exhaustion, gone is their real efficiency, their real creativity and let’s face it, they’re not very attractive to a potential buyer when stressed to the max.
So step up to the plate, tell your other self that likes to hold you back to step aside, and shine your light in a way that is a beacon to others and gets you noticed! How have you stepped aside so you can be your very best??

Don’t Let Fear Get in the Way of Your Dreams
Remember learning to ride a bike for the first time? I bet you were scared.
Remember that first date? Terrible butterflies.
Walking into a job interview with the hiring team sitting around the board table? Terrified.
Thinking about quitting your “secure” job and starting your own business? No way, too much of a risk.
Yes, fear can wreck havoc with our dreams, block us from moving forward and turn us into sputtering, sweat dripping, mind numbed creatures.
The good news is; is that we can learn to beat fear and put it in its place!
Fear is one of the most basic human emotions. It’s programmed into our nervous systems and works like an instinct. From the time beginning, we are equipped with the survival instincts necessary to respond with fear when we sense danger or feel unsafe.
Fear is useful too as it helps protect us by alerting us to danger. It prepares us to deal with the danger at hand. Feeling afraid is very natural — and helpful, in some situations. Fear can be like a warning, a signal that cautions us to be careful.
Like all emotions, fear can be mild, medium, or intense, depending on the situation and the person. The feeling of fear can be brief or it can last longer, turning into chronic worry and keeping us up at night.
The problem with this basic emotion is that fear can get in the way of when we strive to learn something new, or start a new undertaking that we perceive as risky.
Are You Standing In Your Own Way?

I know, I’ve been in your shoes. You have a dream, a grand vision of something that will happen “some day.” Maybe it is something that you’ve kept quietly to yourself, or that you journal about, or that you’ve incorporated into your dream board, or that you boast about.
But the sad truth of the matter is that your dream has not yet begun to take shape because you have not stepped in to your dream. It takes courage to step into your dream and make your dream come alive, but without beginning, you will never see it become reality.
Are you waiting until the time is right? Until you have more money, or until the kids are gone? Or have you discounted your dream and shut it down because you think you are too old, you don’t have that degree, you don’t look perfect…or maybe because you just might fail?
The truth of the matter is that there is no perfect time, no right time. Now! is the right time to step into your dream. Tell yourself no more excuses. The time is now. All the “what if’’s and “buts” are just fear disguising themselves as excuses.

Being Out On The Skinny Branches

My girlfriend LeAnn, who’s also a fellow coach, and I have had numerous conversations over the years about taking risks and stepping into our greatness. She calls taking risks “being out on the skinny branches.” That’s such a vivid image to me, not knowing if the branch will break any minute under our feet but trusting we are supported.
Risk taking is any time we are really pushing our own personal limits; trying something new, and listening to that intuition of “yes I can do it — but I’m so darn afraid” and doing it anyways.
No matter what you’re up to in your life, trying to lose weight, going back to school after raising a family, starting a new career, or striving to make that six-figure mark in your business, you will need to stretch yourself and break out of your comfort zone.
The beauty of “hanging out in the skinny branches” is that once you are there, a new foundation somehow grows under your feet and the branch extends and extends supporting you to continue to grow and thrive.
Mastering Your Motivation – Thought of the day:
Realize that life is about trials and errors and it is those trials that result in your business growth, your personal development, and increases your confidence.
I say “Life is only as rich as the risks you are willing to take.”
